From Jacob Lake, the AZT resumes Ponderosa forest. One can observe light scorch marks from a fire on the trunks of older trees.
Soon we are in an old burn, where stands of young aspens grow amid tall Ponderosa. Older aspen might have been wiped out by a fire, but they are one of the first tree species to re-establish after a burn.

Continuing on the trail reroute after a very cold night, the route moves into Ponderosa forest.

Buckskin Gulch changed suddenly upon entering the fee area, with no small rocks, the addition of low grasses, and most significant of all curvy unfractured rock faces.
