East View?

HDT 2022 Day 30, April 30, Saturday
Start Jacob Lake Inn near S10 mile 25.9
End edge of Grand Canyon at East View trailhead S10 mile 51.0
Miles walked: 25.1

From Jacob Lake, the AZT resumes Ponderosa forest. One can observe light scorch marks from a fire on the trunks of older trees.

Soon we are in an old burn, where stands of young aspens grow amid tall Ponderosa. Older aspen might have been wiped out by a fire, but they are one of the first tree species to re-establish after a burn.

We enter a burn area that goes on for several miles.

After the burn, the route goes through mixed conifer forest with several meadows, often with seasonal lakes from snow melt.

I meet several AZT hikers throughout the day, looking forward to the end of their adventure. They report seeing 2 or 3 Hayduke hikers today. One HDT hiker actually passes me– his permit for the Grand Canyon starts May 2, and he stayed a few days in Kenab to make that work.

Pushing ahead, I arrive late in the day at East Canyon Overlook.
