Sawcy

  • GET 2024 day 19, Oct 19, Saturday
  • Start Nave Spring campsite
  • End Nave Spring campsite
  • Continued sawing between Nave Spring and Myers cabin. So many blowdowns.

Rain showers pinged the tent throughout the night, and threatened to continue in the morning. With the sun hidden by clouds, conditions were very cold and wet. I tried sawing for an hour, but had to retreat to the tent to warm up afterwards. Then the weather cleared a bit, the sun came out, and work could resume for real.

I spent most of the day working where the trail follows along a drainage, clearing trees and trying to make the trail easier to see.

In distance I did not get very far, maybe a quarter of a mile. More work remains on this section for tomorrow.

Sawlitude

  • GET 2024 day 18, Oct 18, Friday
  • Start Nave Spring campsite
  • End Nave Spring campsite
  • Sawing and lopping on Shipman between Nave Spring and Myers Cabin, about 1.0 miles. Not complete. Cleared 83 trees

My plan is to work towards Myers Cabin,  systematically clearing all downed trees in this section. However, some areas had vast numbers of downed trees, and the actual trail was hard to calculate, so I skipped those until I could verify the trail from the other direction.

Lunch was at the Myers Cabin site.

Myers Cabin to Nave Spring campsite on Shipman Trail, 1.0 mile

The rest of the day I worked on the difficult areas, which I hope to complete tomorrow.

Sawtisfaction

  • GET 2024 day 17, Oct 17, Thursday
  • Start Nave Spring campsite
  • End Nave Spring campsite
  • Cleared blowdowns from 0.8 miles of Shipman, from Nave Spring heading trail E or N

The day is cool and overcast, without much wind. Light showers last only a minute or so, including one with hail. Sawing keeps me warm.

Mid-morning two thru-hikers passed by, Squirt and Snotpiss.

They are doing a Northern New Mexico Loop/CDT/GET custom thru-hike. When hearing that I was doing a trail-work adventure, they mentioned how nice the beginning of Shipman is now.

The sky changes from overcast to scattered clouds several times.
