Mike C. and Marty from the Socorro BLM office invited me along to walk the proposed multi-use Landavaso Trail 3.5 mile loop just north of Hwy 60 and the Magdalena airport.

The area is rolling grassy hills with juniper and piñon (mostly juniper), small scattered surface rocks, surrounded by views of several distant peaks and mountain ranges.

BLM is organizing a trail building session on National Public Lands Day, September 23, 2023, and is hoping for a large group of local volunteers to help out.

Nine NMVFO volunteers returned with the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation for a weekend working on water restoration in Limestone Canyon in the Cibola National Forest, south of the VLA.

We used techniques somewhat unfamiliar to NMVFO, building or repairing one-rock dams (one rock in height, a few rocks in length) and “Zuni bowls” in creek channels. The aim is to reduce erosion and deepening of channels during high flow events, by slowing and capturing water.

Thanks to AWF for cooking and instruction on the fine art/science of water restoration. Saturday evening we shared potluck dinner, along with bison burgers.

Good project, will return!

Volunteers with Socorro Trails / NMT Bike Club lopped brush along North Baldy Trail, after being shuttled from Hop Canyon Trailhead to the south end of the trail up the rather exciting Water Canyon Rd / FR235.

We worked along the trail all day, lopping Gambel oak and “catsclaw”, and eventually descended on Hop Canyon #25A, an 8 mile trip.

North Baldy Trail follows along a high ridge, and we were treated to excellent views on both sides.
