HDT 2022 Day 29, April 29, Friday
Start S10 mile 14.1 plus 0.8 mile on trail reroute
End Jacob Lake Inn near S10 mile 25.9
Miles walked: 14.3
Continuing on the trail reroute after a very cold night, the route moves into Ponderosa forest.
After rejoining the AZT, the path tends to stay on wide ridges in pine forest.
Getting to Jacob Lake, I dig up my food cache, and decide to treat myself to a night at the Inn, even though it has not been that long since my Zero. My body is telling me to eat more before the challenging next few days, and the off-season room rate is a real bargain, and a warm night of sleep will be welcome.
In the cafe I meet Funnybone, who did the Hayduke twice, in 2009 and then again in 2014. He is now about to finish the AZT.
When asked, he had no plans to do the HDT a third time. :-)
I also met three mountain bikers doing the AZT, who had just strapped their bikes on their backs to go down and up the Grand Canyon! Craziness…
You do not often see cyclists carrying trekking poles, but this trio found them essential to descend into the canyon.
Do you see many-mostly ultralight hikers and bikers?
